Microsoft Print to PDF is the virtual printer built into Windows: choose it in any Print dialog and you get a PDF instead of paper. When it disappears from the printer list, or refuses to make the A1 sheet you need, here is how to fix it, and what to use instead for large-format drawings.
Microsoft Print to PDF is missing: how to restore it
- Press Windows key + R, type
optionalfeaturesand press Enter. The Windows Features window opens. - Find Microsoft Print to PDF. If the box is empty, tick it, click OK and restart when asked.
- If the box is already ticked, untick it, click OK, restart, then tick it again and restart once more. Use Restart, not Shut down, so Windows really reloads.
- Open Settings, Bluetooth & devices, Printers & scanners and check that it is listed.
Still missing? Restart the Print Spooler service (Services, Print Spooler, Restart), or re-enable the feature from an administrator PowerShell window:
Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName "Printing-PrintToPDFServices-Features" -All
Why it will not print A1 or A0
The built-in Microsoft Print to PDF printer only offers standard paper sizes up to A3. A2, A1 and A0 are not in its list, and editing driver files to add them is unreliable and not supported by Microsoft. For drawings, that limit matters: a sheet set up at A1 and printed through Microsoft Print to PDF comes out shrunk onto A3, and it is no longer at its stated scale.
The right way to make PDFs of drawings
| Program | Use |
|---|---|
| AutoCAD | Plot with the DWG To PDF.pc3 plotter, which supports large ISO and ANSI sheet sizes, or Export to PDF. |
| Revit | Use Revit's built-in PDF export rather than printing to a PDF printer. |
| ArchiCAD | Save layouts as PDF or publish a set through the Publisher. |
| Any other program | A third-party PDF printer that supports custom and large paper sizes. |
The CAD program's own exporter keeps vector linework, sheet size and scale. A generic printer may rasterise parts of the sheet or fit it to a smaller page.
Check the PDF before you send it
- Page size: does the PDF report the sheet size you set up (A1 is 841 × 594 mm)?
- Scale: measure one known dimension on the PDF. If it is off, the sheet was fitted to the page.
- Sharpness: zoom in; lines should stay crisp. Blurry lines mean the sheet was rasterised.
Ncored, the PDF editor we built in our architecture studio, makes the scale check quick: set the sheet's scale and measure a known length on the PDF, on Windows or Mac. When the set is right, it prints whole sheets or a framed region at a readable scale. See printing drawings to scale.
Frequently asked questions
Why is Microsoft Print to PDF missing in Windows 11?
The optional Windows feature is switched off or its printer was removed. Re-enable it in Windows Features and restart.
Can Microsoft Print to PDF do A1 or A0?
No. Its largest standard size is A3. Use your CAD program's PDF export or a PDF printer that supports large sizes.
Why is my printed PDF drawing not to scale?
Usually it was printed to a smaller paper size and fitted to the page. Export at the real sheet size from the CAD program.
