What does cropping actually change?
It trims the visible page area by setting a new crop box and media box on each page, so every viewer and printer shows the smaller page. The page content underneath is kept, you are changing where the page edges sit, not deleting anything.
Can I crop a different amount on each side?
Yes. Use the same margin on all four sides, or switch to per-side mode and set top, bottom, left, and right separately in millimetres. The same crop is applied to every page in the file.
