To cancel an Adobe Acrobat subscription, sign in at account.adobe.com, open Plans, choose Manage plan for your Acrobat plan, and select Cancel plan. What it costs depends on your plan type. Cancelling within 14 days of the first purchase gets a full refund. After 14 days, an annual plan paid monthly charges an early termination fee of 50% of the remaining contract balance; an annual prepaid plan is not refunded; a month-to-month plan can be cancelled without a fee. These are Adobe's published terms for US subscribers; check the terms for your country before you cancel.
Cancellation terms by plan type
| Plan type | Cancel within 14 days | Cancel after 14 days |
|---|---|---|
| Annual plan, paid monthly | Full refund | Early termination fee: 50% of the remaining balance of the contract |
| Annual plan, prepaid | Full refund | No refund if you cancel before the year ends |
| Month-to-month | Full refund | No early termination fee (the fee applies only to annual plans) |
Adobe's own example: on an annual plan paid monthly, cancelling in the ninth month means paying 50% of the fee for the three remaining months. Source: Adobe's help page "Understand Adobe's subscription terms and refund policies" (helpx.adobe.com), last updated January 2026.
Step by step
- Go to account.adobe.com and sign in with the Adobe ID that holds the subscription.
- Open Plans (sometimes shown as Plans and payment).
- Find the Acrobat plan and choose Manage plan.
- Choose Cancel plan, give a reason, and continue past any retention offers if you want to cancel.
- Read the final summary: it shows the end date and any fee or refund before you confirm.
- Confirm, and keep the confirmation email.
Labels in Adobe's account pages change from time to time; the path through Plans and Manage plan has stayed the same for years. If your licence comes from your employer (a Teams or Enterprise plan), only your company's admin can cancel or reassign it.
How to avoid the early termination fee
- Cancel within the first 14 days for a full refund.
- Time the cancellation near the end of your annual term. The fee is 50% of what remains, so it shrinks as the term runs out. Check your renewal date under Plans first.
- Turn off auto-renewal or switch plans ahead of renewal, so a new annual term does not start.
- Ask Adobe support. Some users report fee waivers or plan switches through support, but there is no published policy guaranteeing one.
What happens to your files
Your PDFs stay on your computer and keep working in any PDF reader. Files stored in Adobe's cloud stay accessible within the free storage allowance; Adobe's terms say that if you are over the limit when you cancel, you have 30 days to move files out. Download anything important from Adobe cloud storage before you cancel.
What to use instead for drawings
If you mainly used Acrobat to open, mark up and print drawings, a PDF editor you buy once may cost less over a few years than a subscription. Ncored is the PDF editor we built in our architecture studio for heavy construction drawing sets from AutoCAD, Revit, and ArchiCAD: markup, revision clouds, measurement to scale, revision compare, stamps and printing, on Windows and Mac, in English and German. It is sold monthly, yearly or as a one-time lifetime licence, and you can try it for 14 days free. No signup, no email, nothing to enter. It does not create digital signatures, fill forms or run OCR, so if you depend on those, keep a tool that does. See Adobe Acrobat alternatives you buy once and best Adobe Acrobat alternatives.
Frequently asked questions
Why does Adobe charge a cancellation fee?
Adobe states that annual plans are discounted compared with month-to-month plans, and the early termination fee applies if you leave an annual plan before the year ends.
Can I get a refund on Adobe Acrobat?
Yes, a full refund if you cancel within 14 days of the initial purchase. After that, annual prepaid plans are not refunded.
Can I still open my PDFs after cancelling Acrobat?
Yes. PDFs are an open format; any PDF reader opens them, including the free Acrobat Reader.
Does cancelling Acrobat delete my Adobe account?
No. The account converts to a free membership; you can still sign in with the same Adobe ID.
