The main free ways to open a DWG file without AutoCAD are DWG TrueView, Autodesk's free Windows program for viewing, measuring, printing and converting DWG and DXF files, and Autodesk Viewer, a free browser-based viewer that opens DWG along with many other 2D and 3D formats. Several third-party viewers also exist for Windows, Mac and the browser. Free viewers let you look, measure and print, but not edit; editing a DWG needs AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT, the AutoCAD web app, or a DWG-compatible CAD program.
Free DWG viewers compared
| Viewer | Platform | What it does | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| DWG TrueView (Autodesk) | Windows | View, measure, plot or print, convert DWG to older DWG versions, print to PDF | Free download from Autodesk; view only, no editing |
| Autodesk Viewer | Browser | View DWG and many other formats (RVT, DWF, STEP and more), share and comment | Files are uploaded to Autodesk's cloud; check your project's confidentiality rules |
| AutoCAD web app | Browser | View and edit DWG | Included with AutoCAD subscriptions; not a free viewer |
| Third-party viewers | Windows, Mac, browser | Viewing, sometimes measuring and markup | Quality and DWG version support vary; download only from the developer's own site |
How to open a DWG file with DWG TrueView
- Download DWG TrueView from Autodesk's website (the official product page, not a mirror site).
- Install it on Windows 10 or 11.
- Open the DWG; switch between Model and the layout tabs to see sheets as plotted.
- Use Measure for distances and areas, or Plot to print or create a PDF.
- Use DWG Convert if someone needs the file saved to an older DWG version.
Common problems opening DWG files
- Missing xrefs: the DWG references other files that were not sent. Ask for an eTransmit package or a bound drawing. See what is an xref.
- Missing fonts (SHX): text shows in a substitute font; the drawing is fine, the look is not.
- Proxy objects: objects from vertical products such as Civil 3D appear as boxes or not at all in plain viewers.
- Newer DWG version: old viewers cannot read files saved by newer AutoCAD releases; update the viewer.
Is a DWG viewer what you actually need?
Most people outside the CAD team (clients, contractors, consultants checking a drawing) need the sheets as issued, not the model. For them, a PDF exported from the DWG is usually better: it shows exactly what was issued, with the right lineweights and title block, and no xrefs or fonts can go missing. See exporting DWG to PDF for review.
For those PDFs, Ncored is the PDF editor we built in our architecture studio. Heavy drawing sets from AutoCAD, Revit, and ArchiCAD open fast and stay smooth on scroll, zoom, pinch and pan, on Windows and Mac. You can mark up, measure to scale with snapping to the drawing's own lines, and compare revisions. Ncored does not open DWG files themselves; for those, use one of the viewers above.
